We are bringing esports to Columbus! Besides being the fastest-growing sport genre, esports has a primary target audience that is critical to parks and recreation agencies:  teens and young adults. Did you know that, “70 percent of kids stop playing sports by the age of 13, while, in contrast, 90 percent of kids ages 12–17 play video games” (National Alliance for Youth Sports)? It is important to us that we provide a socially inclusive, safe space for those whom might be otherwise secluding themselves to play egames or esports. As a parks department who is also aware of and working to combat the national obesity epidemic, we will be working to also introduce VR (virtual reality) segments of egames and esports to provide participants with an alternative that will keep them active!
